Sad Day

Today my dear baby, Tiny, passed away. He was old--we estimate about 17 years old, though we're not sure. I still remember the first time I saw his little face. I'd gone to the local animal shelter in Colorado because I just felt that I needed a little dog of my own. I looked at all of the dogs there, and though they were all precious, I didn't feel like I'd really found the right dog for me. Then John caught my attention and pointed to the upstairs landing. Peeking his tiny, heart-shaped face out between the banisters was Tiny--the cutest dog I'd ever seen. He just looked at me with fearful, hopeful eyes. John brought him to me and the instant Tiny was in my arms he fell asleep just like a baby. He knew he was home. I loved everything about him...his right ear that bent a little, his teeny little paws with the fur between his paw-pads, his skinny little tail, his big brown eyes, his one tooth and his sweet personality, that had just a little bit of grit. He became my baby, at a time when I needed a little pet to love and comfort me. He was always happy to see me, running up and down our stairs in Colorado, sleeping as close as he could to me, doing his little hop into my hand when I came over to pick him up, and growling at Dusty--our 110 pound Labrador. He followed me everywhere and loved to be held. Sometimes I'd just walk around the house, carrying him in my left hand, while doing housework with my right hand. I would sometimes sneak him into the movies in a blanket, which cracked up our kids. I loved wrapping him in his little blanket and taking him with me in the car as I ran errands. Everywhere we went people loved Tiny. I have never seen a cuter dog, and I really loved that little guy. In one of my first posts for this blog I wrote that "Tiny and I needed each other." This is more true than I can express here. John reminded me today that Tiny's vet had only expected him to live a few months, because he was sick and underweight when we adopted him. In fact, in the 3 1/2 years that we had Tiny, at least three different vets told me I should have him euthanized, because they thought he wasn't going to make it. I just knew that he still had some life left in him, and he did--he just kept going, and lived a happy, healthy life right up to the end, when his little heart finally just got tired and gave out. He was never in pain, and I was blessed to be able to hold and love him right up to the last breath he took--I am so thankful for those last few tender mercies at the end of his life. I'll miss you so much, Tiny. Thank you for being such a wonderful little buddy.

"Let Me Be Your Cinco De Mayo Hombre!"

Come here my little Chihuahua Bonita...I will be your Cinco de Mayo hombre! We will eat tacos (Yo quiero Taco Bell!), and watch the bullfights. My beautiful Senorita, I take you to Acapulco with me and we make beautiful music together. We will eat chalupas and pupusas!!! I will sing to you " La Cucaracha" under the moonlight.

Cinco de Mayo will be our day of chihuahua love...

"Swine Flu??....zzzzzzz...."

Swine Flu? SWINE FLU!!!?? What is THAT? What about "Chihuahua Flu!?" I'm WAY more concerned about THAT! Oh...wait...there is no such thing as "Chihuahua Flu"....and....I'm just a fluffy little dog. I don't HAVE to worry about Swine Flu...or the crumbling economy....or the narco-terrorists in Mexico...or....hmmmm....

I think it's time for another snooze.

Ohhhh yeah...that's the spot.....

"It's The Easter Chihuahua!"

...So I get this email the night before Easter. There was a HUGE blizzard outside and I'd been slaving over my blog all day. I had a bad case of "Chihuahua Block." The Bunny (you know..."THE Bunny"...) sent me a note saying, "Dude! I can't get to your house!! Too much snow! Can you take care of it for me? Thanks...I owe you BIG TIME!"

Oh man! First I have Chihuahua Block and now I have to do the Bunny Thing? Well, my peeps had already set out their Easter baskets and gone to bed, so I pretty much had no choice. I went ahead and filled everyone's baskets with candy and a stuffed bunny (hmmmfft! I should have put a stuffed chihuahua in each basket...after all, I was the one doing all the work...!) But my peeps were happy when they woke up, eating their candy and saying, "WOW, that Easter Bunny sure did a great job this year!" Yeah..."he" sure did. Oh well, I got my own Easter basket too, and stuffed it with doggy treats, so I guess it all worked out. Thanks a lot, Bunny...you owe me big time! -Tiny

Thanks for being my person, for finding me in the shelter and for giving me a home. Thanks for all of the yummy doggy treats you give me, and the special food you buy me (even though it sorta costs a lot). Thanks for letting me go with you in the car sometimes, and for letting me sleep next to you. And thanks especially for all of the love and hugs you give me.

Poopy walks are kinda tough when you're only 7 inches tall and the snow is 9 inches tall...

....I sniffed and SNIFFED and still couldn't find my "special place".... I was getting a little desperate...!

"bath day"

Hey! Can't a guy get a little privacy?

How come wolves and coyotes don't have to take baths?! I'm just like those guys...my peeps just don't get me sometimes.

The only thing I like about "bath day" is when we're DONE! Jenn gives me extra cuddles (so I guess it's worth it after all). Excuse me while I snooze...zzzzz

"Hey! You're Squishin' Me!"

Okay, so here's the deal...I have this bed I sleep on. Jenn says it's "king-size"...but she should really say that it's "Tiny-size" 'cause this is MY bed. I just let my peeps sleep on it so they can scratch me on my tummy while I sleep. That's the ONLY reason...if they weren't scratchin' my tummy every night, they'd be OUTTA HERE!

The problem is...they take up WAY too much room. So I have this little trick. While they sleep, I gradually nudge closer and closer to them. Since they're afraid of squishin' me in their sleep, they scoot closer and closer to the edge of the bed, until they're hanging right on the edge of my giant bed, and then I have LOTS of room! It's a great plan and it works every night! Silly peeps...

Sundays are the BEST doggy days! Well actually, every day is a doggy day--but Sundays are the doggiest!
That's because I get to read the Sunday comics! I like "Marmaduke" and "Snoopy" the best, though I think I need to start a comic strip about ME. I could call it "Tiny's World," or "Tiny Tails"...(get it--tails!) Or maybe I could call it...hmmm...I'm gettin' sorta sleepy...

"Guarding My Person, Jenn"

...So here I am guarding my person, Jenn. I rescued her when she came to visit me at the animal shelter.

I was in a section of the shelter for dogs to be "euthanized" the next day. I'm not sure what that means...I think it was some kind of spa treatment for the extra-cute dogs...

I remember that I had a bad case of "kennel cough" and was pretty thin...my bones were sticking out and I was tired a lot...but when she saw my cuteness she couldn't resist. She picked me up and I fell asleep in her arms immediately. They say that "we" choose our people...they don't choose us...

She sure is lucky...and I take good care of her. Once I overheard her telling someone that "Tiny and I needed each other..."

Yeah...she's pretty lucky, I'd say...
